On a Raspberry Pi Zero W (1), the serial connection times out quite often.

Implement a retry mechanism. Perhaps 5 retries before a fatal exception would be good.

The retry mechanism seems to do the trick, there have been a couple of warnings about the timeout in the last day. All of them indicate that the next attempt to talk to the bus succeeds, so it's probably a quirk with the hardware.
